We do not encourage individuals trying this method without the proper education, designated location, and materials to assure a safe working environment. That’s important here because BHO extraction can be genuinely dangerous if done improperly. In most places, solvent extraction is treated more harshly than possession. Even where cannabis is legal, home hydrocarbon extraction often isn’t.On request project we decided to take some basic blond Moroccan dry-sift, and put it through a stainless steel butane based filter system, to see what the quality conversion of a mediocre- yet reasonably fresh product to a high-end product would be. Because compared to smoking or pressing the hash directly, more of the cannabinoids end up in the final product.
The BHO (butane hash oil) method is a hydrocarbon extraction that aggressively strips cannabinoids and terpenes using a solvent. Although BHO is very efficient at pulling THC and other cannabinoids out of material. It can also strip or destroy the left-over terpenes from the material resulting in potent, but flat-tasting oil.
Blond Moroccan hash is typically dry-sift, low-moisture, often older or partially oxidised resin. Since hash generally already has 99% plant matter removed, BHO pulls fewer chlorophylls and waxes than it would from fresh flower. But the resulting oil tends to be more chemically uniform than hand-worked hash.
Studies show that some of the more common Cannabinoids (from the 140+ known in Cannabis), such as THCa and THCV are the biggest casualties during oxidation. While THC partially survives but over time shifts toward CBN. And CBD being more oxidatively stable than THC, staying relatively steady.
Because Moroccan hash is often oxidised before extraction it usually results in a darker oil with a less ‘clean’ effect compared to fresh resin extracts. Oxidation is quietly one of the biggest factors shaping how traditional hash feels compared to modern fresh-resin concentrates. With plenty of curiosity, not much expectations and no set goal, we ran some gold-dust through the system. And after a good 48 hour heat- and vacuum purge the results were on par. The beautiful gold honey-like wax had cleaned up very nicely. Still containing some delicious sweet hints and as expected a nice stoned effect.
